Two Ladies and and Emu by Carla Moore

By special arrangement with Carla Moore

Directed by Tracey Okeby-Lucan

April 12th - May 4th

After the death of her husband, Judith takes her cousin Ruth on a road trip to outback NSW in her brand new 4WD. After car troubles, endless red roads, strange encounters and an altercation with an emu, Judith and Ruth will end up discovering more about themselves than the outback. This world premiere comedy from Theatre on Chester's resident playwright Carla Moore, is partially drawn from her memories of relationships, dinner parties and elocution lessons both good and bad.

How did you like the event?

A nostalgic play for the locals. Probably wouldn't travel. Well written but almost playing too much to the locals. Set worked well - car, stretcher. Use of projection and more artistic lighting could have enhanced the production. Scene changes could have been slicker. Acting competent. Guitar unnecessary and distracting. Final scene didn't quite work for me. The "revelation" was obvious from early in the play. Still an enjoyable night from a respected company.

How did you like the event?

Totally exceeded expectations! A great Australian play, incredibly well acted and produced (as are all your productions). It was very funny but also moving and though-provoking. Music fabulous as well. Thanks so much.

How did you like the event?

My 3 friends and I are regular subscribers and we all thoroughly enjoyed this play last night. The musical soundtrack and the surprising inclusion of live songs evoked our memories of the 70’s including references to drinks (Dry & Dry and wines) and events around that time that we’d long parked in our own past experiences. It was lovely to chat with director Tracey after the show and as usual the best writing comes from real lived experiences even if transposed into fiction

How did you like the event?

Terrific script, innovative, poignant, funny and very clever, well done Carla! The actors did the writing justice, which suggests the Director did too. And, as always, the front of house, support, and 'behind the curtain' crews excelled...the Jimmy was a triumph. Thank you all for another entertaining evening, and in our very own backyard!

How did you like the event?

The first few minutes felt a bit awkward but then I was in to it and loved it! The plot twist was clever and there were lots of local references to amuse. Definitely worth going to see!

How did you like the event?

Great night of fun with humorous and serious undertones cleverly overlapping each other. The performance by cast members was fabulous. And the ladies’ four wheel drive - what can I say? Given scheduled servicing is maintained I am sure they will get many kms from it. So long as they don’t hit any emus!

How did you like the event?

After a “setting the scene “ start, the inner world of a bereaved woman unravels - as does that of her cousin. The actors truely live their parts. Brilliant! Another Carla Moore highlight.

How did you like the event?

Up to your usual standard (Excellent!!!!). I would especially commend the set builders/designers. The clever use of the "vehicle" on stage must have taken some thought! The comment on careers offered to women at the time (nurse, secretary orprimary-schoolteacher) resonated. When I was in secondary school these were the only careers permitted by vocational guidance experts!

Enjoyed the show. We were in the second front row, but found we missed some of the speech of the uppity lady. But otherwise ,good set, kept moving. Thank you

How did you like the event?

Very disappointed with the language and the sexual themes. There is so much more that could have been included on an outback trip that would have been more entertaining and humourous. We left at intermission. It would be good if plays could have a rating so people are aware what it might be like and not waste their money. I took my sister for her birthday and she had been to the theatre a few times before and always enjoyed the plays and hadn’t heard language like this be4.

How did you like the event?

Enjoyed the play, the script and acting was great! but thought the production could be improved to better bring the ladies’ travel experiences to life eg. the pub karaoke scene could have been more lively with some background pub noise on opening of the scene, and perhaps a background scene behind the microphone of an outback bar! Also maybe some more colour on the side screens on the stage, capturing the amber/red colours of the outback.
