Three Tall Women

Event Flyer

The protagonist, a compelling woman more than 90 years old, reflects on her life with a mixture of shame, pleasure, regret, and satisfaction. She recalls the fun of her childhood and her early marriage when she felt overwhelming optimism. She also bitterly recalls negative events that caused her regret: her husband’s affairs and death, and the estrangement of her gay son. The woman’s relationship with her son is the clearest indication that Albee was working through some troubling memories of his own in Three Tall Women. Raised by conservative New England adoptive parents who disapproved of his being gay, he left home at 18, as does the son in this play. Albee admitted to The Economist that the play "was a kind of exorcism. And I didn’t end up any more fond of the woman after I finished it than when I started."

Directed for LCCT by Michael Wise

How did you like the event?

To my way of thinking if a woman lives to be 90 and the her most cherished memories relate to a couple of illicit sexual encounters, she did not live a life worth note. However, although the play was way, way, way too long, the actors' line memorization was impressive.

How did you like the event?

Outstanding performances by the actresses. Along with production quality and direction, Albee's art and message was delivered right on. The play's humanity and mystery of life was professionally expressed.

How did you like the event?

This production was masterful! The three ladies were all absolutely amazing in their roles, particularly Deborah Storm. I was thoroughly impressed by the level of detail in the set and I believe that is what took this production to a whole other level.

How did you like the event?

I liked this show very much! Having lived some of what was portrayed in this show, I found it very funny. The author must have lived this experience to be able to get it so right. The actresses did a great job of interpreting the play, they were wonderful. I especially loved that sassy old lady. She was a hoot!

How did you like the event?

Excellent performances; the dialogues were incredible. However, we thought the choice of Albee was a little heavy for the last show of the season.

How did you like the event?

Even when this play first came out, the common person's life, in general, had surpassed the play's "insider knowledge" of Life Experiences. Even knowing Albee's penchant for demoralizing mirror-gazing, I was appalled that his words brought him the awards they did. What sad, sheltered people the voters must have been. HOWEVER, I have nothing but very high praise for this production; the acting was superb; all that dialog for the elderly version! Excellent
