The Welkin by Lucy Kirkwood

Rural England, 1759. Halley’s Comet burns in the sky, and a young woman is sentenced to hang. But when she tries to escape the noose by claiming to be pregnant, a jury of twelve women are gathered to decide whether she is telling the truth. As tensions rise, their task becomes a reckoning: with the law, with power, and with the roles they’re forced to play in a world that silences them.

Tony-Award Nominee Lucy Kirkwood’s The Welkin (Chimerica, The Children) is a bold and blistering courtroom drama—by turns darkly comic and quietly devastating—about justice, duty, and righteous dissent.

CONTENT WARNING: THE WELKIN contains scenes of violence and mature content, including domestic abuse and miscarriage, descriptions of hanging and sexual assault, child death, and strong language. We recommend this show for audiences ages 16+.

Incredible cast and crew! The acting was absolutely outstanding and the story was an important one. Bravo for choosing the art that makes us uncomfortable and forces us to think.

How did you like the event?

The play was extremely well acted and the story was riveting and thought-provoking. I was amazed at how professional the set and the costumes looked. The one short-coming, and I realize that there is little that can be done in this venue, is that some of the drama took place on the floor and from the back rows it was impossible to see.

How did you like the event?

Very intense play. The actors were incredible. It would be great to have a raised stage for everyone not in the front seats.

How did you like the event?

It was long. Intense. Physical. Occasionally confusing (the stove exploding?) Characters generally well defined - no easy task! Covered the waterfront of women's woes. Ambitious undertaking well implemented - congrats.

An intense and dark play with light moments. It made you think. Amazing acting - cannot say enough about the actors and the difficult roles they had to play. Amazing!!!!
