The Shot

starring Sharon Lawrence

A workshop production
of a new play by Robin Gerber
Directed by Michelle Joyner
Produced by Spark Theatrical

Before she became publisher of The Washington Post newspaper, Katharine Graham hid a terrifying secret. THE SHOT, steeped in history and politics, explores the surprising, devastating intricacies of resilience and love.

A Note from the Playwright, Robin Gerber . . .

The Shot grew from a nagging thought after I published a biography of Katharine Graham. I had interpreted the transformational moment of her husband's violent death as setting her free from his abuse. After that terrible event, she took over the newspaper and had a storied career as publisher. But the depth of our despair determines how much we struggle to recover, if we ever do. Had I been too glib about Katharine's emotional life after Phil's death? Many interviews with women who had lived through intimate partner violence, reading accounts of their suffering and studying the issue led me to realize how wrong I had been about the arc of Katharine's emergence as publisher. The Shot explores her joys and inner conflicts, her fear, confusion, remarkable determination and deep faith in love and duty. In all of these ways she is a composite of others who have endured, or are still enduring, domestic violence. I hope this play expands our understanding of those who are still suffering, and helps to end this scourge.

How did you like the event?

The play. The gorgeous, nuanced performance by Sharon Lawrence. Michelle Joyner's deft directing. 5 Stars all. I felt two things - that I was indeed in the midst of an intimate conversation with Katherine Graham, and that I was watching a Tony winning performance. All so good. I'll be back. How did you like the event?

Sharon Lawrence lets us feel what it's like to walk in the world of an emotionally and physically abused woman. No matter her wealth or social stature, Katherine Graham had no defense against a husband who professed love and adoration one moment but treated her with violence and public contempt the next. Ms Lawrence gives a mesmerizing performance.

Wow! The play was gripping and intense, the acting superb. The nature of the subject requires showing a broad range of emotion and nuance. I look forward to its receiving wide distribution.

How did you like the event?

A stunning performance of a beautifully written play. I gained so much insight into not only Katherine Graham, but also what it meant and means to be an abused woman - regardless of one’s circumstances. An invigorating evening at the theatre.
