The Letters of Charlotte

A Collier adaptation of Massenet’s Werther

Event Flyer

It's Christmas time, and the aging Charlotte is reminiscing about her time with her first love, the poet Werther. Told through a series of letters and flashbacks, Goethe's story is a tremendously tragic love story made even more powerful by the passionate music of Massenet - often referred to as the french Puccini. In this production, the characters of her youth appear before her, with the story spiraling toward the eventuality of her life's story. BARN OPERA's artistic director, Joshua Collier creates this streamlined production.

Bravo to the performers, pianist, producers, and providers of hospitality! First rate opera, stage setting and lighting appropriate for the drama, observing elderly Charlotte at Christmas juxtaposed with younger Charlotte's romantic and tragic love memories. The only knock for me, sitting in an odd number seat close to stage, was the piano location, the full sound affect was diminished.

I can’t say enough good things about this show. Older Charlotte was amazing. And we cannot stop talking about the pianist!!! More than amazing. I would love to attend a concert/performance of hers. The welcome we feel arriving at the barn is special. Keep up the exceptional work y’all’s are doing!!!

I thought the singers were fabulous. Although I had never seen this particular opera I was told by Josh that it was a different presentation but I thought to adaptions were thoughtful and creative. Lack of elaborate period costumes and sets were less of a distraction to the music and singing. Everyone was open and friendly. A real celebration after the Saturday night performance! Plan to return with my family for the spring/summer performances.

The opera was incredibly moving, and brilliantly staged with minimal space and props. The singing was top notch, and the pianist was a performance all her own. We'll be attending every performance Barn Opera offers! Bravo!

It was another wonderful experience. The music, the singing, the acting, the message. Thank you. Four stars out of five because the Old Charlotte was hard to hear on the side of the audience away from her. She needed to be miked or her words needed to be on the super titles even though she was speaking English. When there was accompaniment to her speaking, it was even more difficult.

The performance was excellent! The cast was extremely talented. The music was excellent. How lucky we are to have a real, quality opera so close to where we live! We will be back for sure!
