The Last Twins

Documentary | Feature | Director: Perri Peltz, Matthew O’Neill | United States 2025 | 80 Mins| English

The Last Twins is the never-before-told story of an unsung hero of the Holocaust, Erno “Zvi” Spiegel, who risked everything to save dozens of young twins from almost certain death at Auschwitz. Under the shadow of Dr. Josef Mengele’s horrific experiments, Spiegel used his courage, compassion, and ingenuity to shield the most vulnerable—the sets of twins targeted for brutal medical experimentation. Mengele put Spiegel in charge of the young boys, but Spiegel used his position to protect and comfort the children, all of whom had been torn from their families and subjected to inhumane tests under the constant threat of extermination.

Through first-hand testimony and exclusive archival material, The Last Twins brings to life the voices of those who survived because of Spiegel’s defiance. It is a testament to resilience, sacrifice, and the power of one person to make a difference, even in humanity’s darkest hour.

The documentary is directed and produced by Emmy Award-winning directors Perri Peltz and Matthew O’Neill and is narrated by Tony Award-winning actor Liev Schreiber.

Featured Short Film:The Unburdened

Narrative – Short  | Director: Arnon Z. Shorr | United States 20225 | 13 Mins | English

"When a busy mother is summoned by her childhood friend to save their buried time capsule, unearthing its contents reveals more about their friendship – and heritage – than either of them expected."

Synopsis: Shayna, a dedicated mother, rushes to prepare a controversial Holocaust program for her school while facing opposition from an anonymous parent. Amidst preparations, an old friend, Marissa, interrupts with news that the land containing their buried time capsule is about to be sold. As they dig it up, buried secrets emerge, revealing Marissa as the anonymous parent. She opposes the program due to concerns about inflicting trauma on non-survivor descendants—like her own “unburdened” children.

Shayna responds angrily, driving Marissa away. This leaves Shayna to explore the time capsule alone. Among childhood memorabilia, Shayna stumbles upon a photo that reveals a shocking new truth—Marissa's grandmother was in fact a Holocaust survivor.

Returning home, Shayna vents to her mother, who advises secrecy regarding Marissa's lineage. Shayna objects, but her mother explains that she knew Marissa’s grandmother’s secret, and that the grandmother specifically insisted that the secret remain hidden.

Shayna struggles with the contradiction, until her daughter intervenes, referencing Biblical contradictions about remembering and forgetting Amalek. She reminds Shayna that the debate about how to process generational trauma is an integral part of Judaism.

Reassured, Shayna decides to proceed with her Holocaust program. But she also reaches out to Marissa, seeking not to convince her, but to reconcile and embrace their differing views.n following Shayna’s journey, the film explores the layered subjectivity of multi-generational trauma, and the sometimes contradictory ways people cope with it.

These disagreements about how to cope can seem harsh and hurtful, but when seen through the lens of Jewish tradition, the very debate is reframed as a sign of healing and reconciliation.
