One of the darkest musicals ever written, Sweeney Todd is the unsettling tale of a Victorian-era barber who returns home to London after fifteen years of exile, seeking vengeance against the corrupt judge who ruined his life. The road to revenge leads Todd to Mrs. Lovett, a resourceful proprietress of a failing pie shop, above which, he opens a new barber practice. Sweeney Todd is lush, operatic, and full of soaring beauty, pitch-black comedy and stunning terror. Awarded eight Tonys (including Best Musical) for its Broadway premiere  Sweeney Todd is one of the signal achievements of the American musical theater of the last fifty years.

TWO SPECIAL PERFORMANCES!

   I’m enjoy the Saturday evening show tremendously. They actors and musicians were amazing. So much talent. So well directed and produced. Loved the moments of comedy that made me laugh.

 Well organized, enjoyed the live orchestra, just a fine production. Enjoyed the entire cast, particularly the young lady who played Ms. Lovett and the young man hawking the hair elixir et al. The Sweeny Todd lead also did an excellent job.

 We are happy to now be on the mailing list for future performances, even though this one wasn't the best experience for us. We now see that the theater has no bad seats and that that SVCT uses live instruments and is at a professional level. We are happy to have found a local theater company since we are relatively new to the area.

How did you like event?

 Sweeney was an ambitious undertaking for SVCT, and fell slightly short in terms of direction and vision. Although the actors were talented, I sense that many were not pushed to their full potential. Some essential elements of the story were not represented, and the orchestra needed more practice with this musically complex Sondheim piece. Aside from limitations, I think everyone did the best that they could, and made it come together.
