Selah Dance Collective presents
Palermo!
Sure Shot Comedy! Bang Up Fun!

January 17-18, 2025

Palermo! (Sure Shot Comedy! Bang Up Fun!) continues Ventura’s choreographic exploration of early 20th-century performance, building on her acclaimed research project Sound and Smoke, which examines the aesthetics and social undercurrents of 1920s German cabaret. This newest work takes inspiration from the Futurist cabarets of Italy in the 1920s and 1930s, offering a profound investigation into the performance of power and the complex relationship between art, politics, and identity during the interwar period. With bold, athletic movement and an immersive soundscape, Palermo! invites audiences into a sensory world where historical echoes collide with contemporary questions of power, agency, and resistance. The work highlights Ventura’s multidisciplinary approach, blending choreography with elements of visual and sonic design to create a layered, dynamic experience.

How did you like the event?

we enjoyed the performance. we laughed and we were engaged with the flow in front of us. we appreciated the range of movement the dancers had... so fluid and energetic. The dancers were often paired up and it was great seeing the variety and the fit with each other. The woman's voice throughout the show was subtle poignant and funny. we enjoyed the show. thank you

How did you like the event?

I particularly loved the comedic elements of the event and using dance and femmage to explore society’s expectations of womanhood. Using a compelling message really adds an extra depth and analysis that educates and captivates wider audiences. I was so intrigued by the topic that I found myself LOVING the components that broke up choreography and explicitly showed us more inside Meredith’s brain and opinions. All choreo was gorgeous. Using a vlog as audio was brilliant.
