On Golden Pond

American Classic

Event Flyer

This classic American comedic drama is every bit as touching, warm, and witty today as when it debuted off Broadway in 1978.

Retired couple Ethel and Norman Thayer are spending their 48th summer at their vacation home on Golden Pond, in the woods of Maine. Their daughter Chelsea visits for Norman’s 80th birthday, bringing her boyfriend Bill and Bill’s teenage son, Billy Jr.

The play explores the turbulent relationship between father and daughter, the generation gap between young and old, and the difficulties of a couple in the twilight years of a long marriage, effortlessly illustrating the hilarious, heartbreaking, human moments of which life is made.

PLEASE NOTE:  this Limelight by SVCT presentation will take place at the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse, 17090 Monterey Road, Morgan Hill, CA.  We will not be able to offer our typical dinner-theater seating at this venue; instead, please choose your reserved seats when you purchase your tickets.

For all performances, the role of Ethel Thayer will be played by understudy Sheila Ellam.

For those with mobility issues, please note that rows E-O are reachable by shallow stairs.  Seating at the five tables near the stage is on the ground level and reachable by ramp.  Additional accessible seating is available in row C; patrons are asked to reserve these seats only if required.

The Playhouse doors will open 60 minutes before the performance, and the theater will open 30 minutes before curtain. Food is prohibited in the theater, but water and drinks in closed cups are allowed.  We will have a few tables and chairs available in the lobby if you wish to bring or buy a snack before taking your seats.

Such amazing acting!!! Very nice transitions too. The “loons” were a bit loud, but overall a wonderful show from start to finish!

Having an understudy for the female character was a little distracting. But, at times, I forgot she was holding the notebook with her lines. The sets were excellent. I'd never seen this play on stage before. I came to see Bill Tindall. He's been wonderful in every production I've seen him in,

I have been to many SVCT plays and this is the first time I had some difficulty at times hearing the dialogue of the actors. Not sure if the speakers weren't working properly. I even noticed that several people around me left after intermission. Could the actors wear microphones? Anyway, I'm still a fan of the theater and will continue attending the plays. 👏🏻

The acting was superb. The set was so realistic. I felt as if I was in the cabin with all of them. A beautiful and touching production. Thank you.

How did you like event?

Sorry, the play was dull, not compelling. I know the stand in for Ethel was pulled in, but the reading from script was distracting. Also, the wall on the left side of the stage was not secured and wobbled away from the wall when the door was opened. That was an avoidable distraction. I have always enjoyed the Community theater, will be back soon. On Golden Pond was not my cup of tea.

How did you like event?

I was moved, inspired, and impressed by this cast. It was a beautiful production - from the set to the costumes and sound effects - it was so well thought out and well-directed. The actors had me laughing one minute and weepy the next. And BIG KUDOS to Sheila Elam for stepping onto the stage as Ethel a mere 5 days before opening and still delivering a beautiful performance. What courage! Bravo!

The dialog from the stage was hard to hear at times. The casting was interesting. The Norman and Chelsea characters were well cast. Every one else fell short. Was there a shortage of people who auditioned? We felt this wasn't one of the strongest we've seen there. A girl as Billy Ray was certainly interesting! We didn't have the primary Ethel (hope she's ok), but her replacement was fine, albeit obviously last minute. The play itself was ok, but multiple sets was needed.

How did you like event?

The set was amazing! This is one of my favorite movies and I know a Fonda/ Hepburn performance is a high standard to live up to! There were circumstances I am sure for the understudy to be performing. I was distracted by the script in her hand , and commend her for her performance. The cast did a good job.

It was a great way to spend the afternoon. It made us want to watch the movie again. The actors did a good job, but it was a little distracting to see the understudy carrying the script.

Last night’s performance should have been cancelled. While the understudy seemed talented she read her entire script the entire performance. It was like paying to watch a rehearsal. A shame as we brought relatives from out of town who were also flummoxed.
