Metropolitan Playhouse
Finding America, One Play at a Time
Metropolitan Playhouse is America's national theater, dedicated to discovering where we come from to better know who we are, Metropolitan Playhouse performs American plays of the past and new plays drawn from America’s diverse culture and history. The Playhouse offers its audiences intimate and surprising encounters with the past to illuminate our present.
Resident in Manhattan’s storied and vibrant East Village, Metropolitan’s home is a 50-seat, thrust theater, known for its involving and immediate performances. Productions range from early and lost American plays to new American and New York-themed work. A typical season includes two to four mainstage productions, one festival of new works, and several one-off presentations of guest artists’ performances, such as short runs, concerts, and readings.
Beginning in 2020, the Metropolitan Virtual Playhouse has brought an expanded repertoire of lost American plays to audiences around the world through the Metropolitan Playhouse YouTube Channel.
