Glorious!

By Peter Quilter

Event Flyer

Directed by Tracey Okeby Lucan

A comedy set in the 1940’s New York, about the worst singer in the world Florence Foster Jenkins known as ‘the first lady of the sliding scale’. Florence an enthusiastic soprano whose pitch was far from perfect, warbled and screeched her way through the evening to an audience who mostly fell about with laughter. But this delusional and joyously happy woman paid little attention to her critics, instead she was surrounded by a circle of devoted friends who were almost as eccentric as she was. Based upon a true story, the play spins from Florence’s charity recitals and extravagant balls, through to her bizarre recording sessions and an ultimate triumph at Carnegie Hall in this hilarious and heart-warming comedy.

How did you like the event?

I loved Glorious! A very uplifting play. Amazing Kate Mannix played the lead and I couldn’t imagine it without her, she’s very expressive and her singing was the standout. Christine Rule as her kooky delusional friend was amazing too!

How did you like the event?

"Glorious" is an excellent production in every respect. Focusing on the latter life of Florence Foster Jenkins, who came to attention through the eponymous movie, the play delicately balances the superficial absurdity of her self-perception, aspirations and endeavours, with a more profound theme which gradually emerges and is poignantly articulated by play's end. It is very funny, peopled by quirky characters, and blessed by impressive performances, especially by the lead.

How did you like the event?

A spectacular re-creation of the life of Florence Foster Jenkins (1868-1944). Enter the world of America’s socialites and enjoy the wry humour of Florence’s extraordinary fan following to acclaimed success, despite her inability to sing! The cast, director and back of house were superb in bringing this comedy to the Theatre on Chester.

How did you like the event?

I think the theatre does drama really well but struggles with comedy plus this would be a very hard play to carry off. I’ll be honest, it was the first play in 3 years of attending that we left after first act

How did you like the event?

This has me laughing until tears rolled down my cheeks, but also managed to convey the warmth and genuine appeal of the main characters. The singing was truly amazing, the sound people and set were brilliant and the costumes beautiful. What a wonderful evening - I was lifted out of the every day, and really enjoyed and appreciated this performance.

Affirmed the importance of self belief & the human capacity to actualise a dream . Great set . All characters maintained a balanced “ star “ quality without overshadowing the other characters . Beautifully produced .

Splendid production! Everything was "glorious" - the costumes, the stage set-up, the actors, the script, the sound and light. A superbly professional performance. p.s. we have a F F-J 78 recording at home and are "fans"!

How did you like the event?

As a group of season ticket holders for the past 12 or so years we have nothing but praise for all those connected with performances. How enlightening to learn of the real existence of Florence. The lead ‘singer’ (screecher) has obviously got a great voice to be able to pull off such a role in sensational fashion. Along with the supporting cast who gave us all an enjoyable night’s entertainment. Bravo!!

How did you like the event?

Loved it! I thought the opening scene and first 20 mins or so a little slow to get going and engage the audience. Kate Mannix was just fabulous - her facial expressions so expressive and hilarious! Loved the back screen showing black and white scenes from NY at the time - really set the context as did the opera music. Well done to everyone involved - a very professional production!
