BROADWAY BOUND

By Neil Simon Directed by Carla Moore

By Arrangement with ORiGiN™ Theatrical

On Behalf of Samuel French A Concord Theatricals Company

August 1st -August 23rd

This is the poignant and funny conclusion of Neil Simon’s semi-autobiographical ‘Eugene Trilogy’, crackling with humour and rippling with family tensions. The two brothers, good-humored lovable Eugene and business-like Stanley, are trying to break into the world of professional comedy writing, while coping with their parents’ messy and gut-wrenching marital split. When their material is broadcast on the radio for the first time, the rest of the family is upset to hear a comedic rendition of their own trials and tribulations. How will Eugene and his brother balance their loyalties to their family and to their art? Broadway Bound was a finalist for the 1987 Pulitzer Prize in Drama.

Thought it was supposed to be a comedy -not sure as there was lots of anger and arguing and tension in the first half of the play between the two brothers Stanley and Eugene. The second half picked up and the audience now was aware of the breaking down of the marriage of the mother and father. All the actors were superb, but we thought the play itself was a bit dated. The sets were great, three cheers to the stage designers.

How did you like the event?

Chester St actors, producers and refreshments as usual very good but the play needed an editor to cut down the length particularly in the first act.

How did you like the event?

I booked 6 tickets. My friends asked - what is it about - my answer : I don’t know, but with Carla Moore directing and Niel Simons as the author, it is bound to be excellent. And excellent it was. The story is an exploration of differing ideas, philosophies and aspirations within a multigenerational family. The enthusiasm of youth, the frustrations of the aged and the realities of those in between were beautifully portrayed. It's a long play - so book dinner accordingly.

How did you like the event?

First class acting. A very high-quality production. The clever set design worked well. Stand out performances from the two sons. The George Raft scene perhaps too long but that is only a small point. Upgraded seats were welcomed.

How did you like the event?

Superb direction and execution by the cast. A gritty play about life sure to resonate with many people, but handled with care and punctuated with light hearted moments to make it very well balanced drama indeed.

How did you like the event?

I found the play too slow and perhaps too long. The lady near me had fallen asleep 15 minutes into the play. My friends left early, sadly. Catherine Potter's performance was exquisite and flawless, esp in the post intermission leg. A Class; 5 stars. I would have edited the protracted dialogues between Eugene
