AWAY by Michael Gow

Directed by Carla Moore

April 10th - May 2nd

MEMORY from 1992:  One of the audience favourites.  Filled with irrepressible humour and a distinct Australian spirit, Away by Michael Gow is a beloved modern classic.  It is Christmas in 1967 and time to re-enact the rituals of the summer holiday.  Three Australian families set out separately but are driven together by a storm, unleashing all the pressures of family secrets.  At times funny and yet painfully truthful, Away explores the comedy and tragedy of their lives against a complex backdrop of the Vietnam War and the social upheavals of the 1960s.

Saturday and Sunday performances are 4pm matinees.

All other performances at 8pm

How did you like the event?

We left at half time as I was bored and theatre was too warm and stuffy. So much so that I started falling asleep

How did you like the event?

Enjoyed the play and production. However, quite disappointed that a patron who was using a walker and her companion were sitting in the seats I had purchased for myself and my friend. I specifically booked two seats for us on the end of the row (D, 11 and 12), as my friend has mobility issues. I'm hoping this situation will not be repeated for our next two theatre attendances this season.Thank you for your attention to this.

How did you like the event?

Loved this production-all the cast were excellent and it was professionally directed. The play is thought provoking and multi layered in meaning with moments of pathos, reflection and reconciliation. Very enjoyable.

How did you like the event?

I studied this play over 30 years ago for the HSC but did not expect to be repeatedly moved to tears last night watching it. Life experience and excellent acting can do that to a person. The casting was spot on for each character. Well done to all!

How did you like the event?

Another great choice The second half seemed quite disconnected I felt there was some random dialogue that was to provoke - it seemed out of place and needed more scene support. Just eliminate it if it doesn’t quite belong. Just because it’s included doesn’t make the play more reflective by touching on all topics

How did you like the event?

Totally engrossing professional performance from all the cast. Life lessons from several directions in the storyline. Felt the 2nd half was underdeveloped to some extent

How did you like the event?

It was years since I had seen "Away", and I had forgotten virtually everything about it. The Chester Street production brought it back to life in a superb production by Carla Moore. The "feel" of the period was evocatively captured, not only by the play itself, but by the actors and by the costuming and sets, while there was not a weak link in the cast. Every one of the diverse characters was portrayed with passion and depth. This is as good as any Chester Street production!

How did you like the event?

I was impressed by the standard of the production. While it was not quite what I was expecting from the blurb I did enjoy the play. Thank you.

Thoroughly enjoyed this journey back to 1968 via the three very different families depicted.
